OPTIMIZING MATERNAL-FETAL HEALTH: APPROACHES TO ACUTE APPENDICITIS DURING PREGNANCY

Abstract
Background: Acute appendicitis is the most common cause of acute surgical abdomen during pregnancy. However, the anatomical and physiological changes occurring during pregnancy often obscure its clinical presentation, posing challenges for diagnosis and management.
Methods: This structured review examines the diagnostic and management strategies for acute appendicitis in pregnant women. Relevant literature was identified through a comprehensive search of electronic databases.
Results: Diagnostic uncertainty necessitates a prompt and comprehensive approach, integrating clinical evaluation, laboratory tests, and imaging examinations. Appendectomy remains the gold standard treatment, with options including open or laparoscopic procedures. Early diagnosis and intervention are critical for reducing maternal-fetal morbidity and mortality.
Conclusion: Acute appendicitis in pregnancy requires heightened clinical suspicion and a multidisciplinary approach. Timely diagnosis and appropriate management strategies are paramount to optimizing outcomes for both the mother and fetus.
