Abstract

Background: The longevity of dental prostheses is influenced by multiple factors, with oral hygiene playing a crucial role in their durability and overall success. Poor oral hygiene can lead to plaque accumulation, gingival inflammation, and periodontal disease, ultimately affecting the fit, stability, and function of prosthetic restorations. Despite advancements in prosthetic materials and techniques, patient maintenance remains a key determinant of prosthetic lifespan. This study aims to evaluate the impact of poor oral hygiene on the longevity of various dental prostheses, including dentures, bridges, crowns, and implants. It examines the role of plaque control, oral habits, and professional maintenance in preventing prosthetic failure and identifies factors that contribute to early deterioration.
Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted at Bibi Aseefa Dental College, Larkana, Sindh, from January 2023 to January 2024. A total of 100 patients with different types of dental prostheses were evaluated. Data collection included clinical examinations, patient interviews, and prosthetic assessments. Saliva analysis and radiographic imaging were performed to detect any underlying biological complications. Statistical methods were used to analyze the correlation between oral hygiene practices and prosthetic longevity.
Results: The findings indicate a strong correlation between poor oral hygiene and reduced prosthetic lifespan. Patients with high plaque accumulation and irregular dental visits had significantly shorter prosthetic durability compared to those who maintained good oral hygiene. Smoking, dietary habits, and inadequate professional maintenance further contributed to early prosthetic wear and failure. Prostheses made of high-quality materials, such as zirconia and metal-ceramic, exhibited greater longevity compared to acrylic and composite restorations.
Conclusion: Maintaining proper oral hygiene is essential for the long-term success of dental prostheses. Regular brushing, flossing, professional cleanings, and avoiding harmful habits such as smoking can significantly enhance prosthetic lifespan. These findings emphasize the need for patient education and improved access to dental care to minimize prosthetic failures and enhance overall oral health outcomes.
