Abstract
Herbal medicines remain a cornerstone of traditional and complementary healthcare, offering bioactive compounds with significant therapeutic potential. Among these, Hygrophila auriculata (Schumach.) Heine, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, commonly known as Talmakhana in Unani medicine, stands out as an exemplary botanical with diverse therapeutic applications. The plant’s utilization spans multiple traditional medical systems—including Unani, Ayurveda, Siddha, and homeopathy. This review aims to provide a comprehensive account of the medicinal value of H. auriculata (Schumach.) Heine, highlighting its Unani insights, ethnomedicinal relevance, pharmacognostic features, phytochemical composition, toxicology and modern pharmacological activities. An extensive survey was conducted from 1941-2025 using various literatures such as related books, Unani classical texts, review articles, research papers via scientific databases & relevant studies reporting this information, then the content was systematically reviewed and synthesized. Findings reveal that H. auriculata (Schumach.) Heine, contains diverse bioactive compounds, including flavonoids, phenolic acids, glycosides, and alkaloids, which contribute to its broad-spectrum biological activities such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and anticancer properties. Ethno-medicinal records support its use in treating respiratory disorders, digestive ailments, wounds, and inflammatory conditions. Pharmacognostic studies further authenticate its identity and quality. Overall, the compiled data highlight the therapeutic versatility of H. auriculata (Schumach.) Heine, supported by both traditional knowledge and modern scientific validation. Integrating traditional wisdom with contemporary scientific inquiry offers promising avenues for novel drug discovery. However, to fully harness its potential, future research should prioritize clinical trials, bioavailability studies, dosage standardization, and formulation development to establish its role in evidence-based medicine.
