Abstract

According to WHO, in 2023 10.8 million people were infected with tuberculosis and 1.25 million deaths were reported. According to Global TB report 2023, India has highest Global TB burden (27%). [3] In 2022, India reported 2.82 million new TB cases and 331,000 deaths. The bacilli in the sputum can be detected microscopically by Z-N staining and Fluorescent Microscopy. Z-N staining and fluorescent microscopy is easiest and most convenient method for detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Hence, this study was done with objective to compare the results of Fluorescent Microscopy and Z-N staining.

Methodology-Total 110 sputum sample age >18year age group in suspected case of pulmonary tuberculosis processed through Z-N staining and fluorescent microscopy for detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.

Result & conclusion-The study highlights the significant burden of TB among young adults (47.2%) and underscores the need for targeted interventions in this demographic. Males comprised the majority of the study population, representing 57.2% of all participants, and similarly, they accounted for 57.14% of the positive cases. Of the 35 positive samples, 16 cases (45.7%) were identified using Ziehl-Neilsen (ZN) staining, while 19 cases (54.3%) were detected through fluorescent microscopy. This indicates a slightly higher detection rate using fluorescent microscopy compared to ZN staining, suggesting potentially greater sensitivity of the fluorescent method.
